NUC - BIOS System Time error

$

We purchased an INTEL NUC Model D34010WYK to use as a Stand-Alone Kiosk Computer.

The unit will need to power on automatically in the morning, so I set the BIOS to do so, but I cannot get it to work.

In our first unit, there was a problem with the CMOS battery failing, so we obtained an RMA and got a replacement unit.

The problem is, the new unit is having similar problems to the first:

• I want the system to start up automatically at specific times each day, so in the BIOS I set the CLOCK and check the box under power settings: to "Wake system from S5" and then set a power-up time. ( For testing purposes, I normally set it 1-2 mins in the future )

• I Save and Exit, and then shut the machine down.

• System does not power on at the set time.

• I boot it up manually by pressing the power button, and check the BIOS settings again.

When Viewing the Date and time, the clock is now incorrect, which is why it is not booting when I want it to...

Each time shut the machine down, the System Time in the BIOS gets reset to 6 hours AHEAD of whatever I had set it to.

Is there some mystery Time Zone checkbox I am missing??

WHY does the BIOS not keep the Time setting that I save??

Not that this matters, but we have installed: Ubuntu 14.04.

4GB of Ram

120GB SSD Drive

I also don't know if this matters, but there is an error showing in the BIOS EVENT log of this replacement unit that says:

Memory Size Decrease (2)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am not from Intel, but I believe you are describing the Linux behavior which by default changes the CMOS RTC to store UTC time instead of local time.

Either you can change your wakeup time (and initial setting of clock in CMOS) to be in UTC (rather than local),

or you can do something like the following three steps (in Ubuntu):

gksudo gedit /etc/default/rcS

modify the line that says UTC=yes

change it to say UTC=no

Thank you for all this information.

Please note that the USB 3.0  ports on the NUCs are now set by default to xHCI but it is backwards compatible with eHCI or 2.0.

So you are saying that when running BIOS 25 on this NUC, all devices are working fine but on version 30?

What devices are you connecting? Please provide Brand and model.

All this has been sent to development but we have no information or ETA about a possible DTS support.

Thanks Kevin, I'm running archlinux and have asked over there. Gist of the replies and various other searches is that with the newer architectures there may be some issue with the usb3 support (kernel modules xhci etc etc). I see some mention here https://communities.intel.com/message/222868 about a BIOS switch for xhci mode; is there such a switch in the D54250WYK BIOS?

Riaan have you tried replacing the NUC?  I’m suggesting you this because I’m using a wireless keyboard and mouse on a D54250WYKH with latest BIOS version.

The model number of the device is Microsoft Wireless 800.

Please check the pictures from my system

Hi Alexlicious,

We have been trying to reproduce the issue and we are investigating. We know Microsoft is aware of this issue also but we have no ETA yet for a fix. I will be back as soon as I have more information

Hi Sylvia

This is the second NUC I have worked with, the first one was a borrowed i3 which I used with a wired mouse and keyboard, I then bought myself the i5 D54250WYKH for use as a Home Theatre PC and encountered this problem with a HP wireless keyboard and mouse, the Microsoft Wireless 800 and the Logitech K400r.

Have you tried using your keyboard and mouse from 6-10 feet away?

Thanks

Riaan

Hi lhill,

Thanks for getting back to me.

In answer to your questions:

- Make/model/part number of the USB 3.0 drive you have - 1TB HGST Touro Mobile Model Number: HTOLMU3EA10001ABB

- Do ALL external USB (both USB 2.0 and 3.0) drives exhibit the issue (if you have more to test with)? - I only have one other USB drive which is a 16GB USB 3.0 pen-drive and, yes, this exhibits the same behaviour. I don't have any USB 2.0 devices to test with at the moment.

- If there is USB 3.0 drive firmware involved, is it up-to-date? - I believe so. I have the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft) driver installed for the USB Controller (version 6.3.9600.17238)

- Does it make any difference as to which USB port on the NUC you plug into? - No the same issue occurs on the front and back USB ports

- In the NUC BIOS, under the Devices & Peripherals > USB menu, what are the settings you have for USB Legacy and the USB ports? - I will need to restart and check

I am running Windows 8.1 here. Just to be clear the drive is recognised it just isn't recognised if I boot from cold (i.e. I've had the device off for a number of hours, unplugged from the mains or not, it doesn't seem to make a difference) with the USB drive plugged in. In this instance I need to unplug the drive again and then plug it back in again.

I contact HGST support about the issue and this is the response I recieved:

some computer send a BOOT UP signal to USB MASS DEVICES (like the Touro) to have them start along with the operating system, but some computer do not, which is your case. I will suggest you to get in contact with Windows support to see if they may be a configuration to solve it. Again there is nothing wrong with your system and the drive, it is just how your computer operate.

NUC i3 D34010WYK - Cold boot = No display?

Hi All,

Just a question about the 4th Gen i3 NUC.

When I cold boot – for the very first time after installing the hardware – there is no display. So I then press and hold the power button for 3-5 secs and it turns off.

I boot it up again, and the display now comes on. However, it says the bios didnt load successfully last time, and asked if I wanted to load previous/default settings – when I hit YES – it loads up fine.

I installed win7, restarting the nuc etc is all good.  Then I turned it off, and  disconnected the power for that night.

Yesterday, I got home, connected the power, cold boot it again, and same thing- nothing on the display – until I turn it off, and turn it on again... again with the same bios didnt load message.  Hit YES, and it loads into windows fine.

Have you guys had this experience?  Would upgrading the bios help?   Or something more serious ?

I have read forum posts, and some say it might be incompatible/bad ram or bad sdd drive - if this was the case, I would think turning off the NUC and then back on again shouldn't fix the issue but it does.

Also, restarting the nuc works fine too. It is just the cold boot that causes no display to be seen.

Any recommendation on what it could be ?

Regards,

Jason

Hi again lhill,

In answer to your last question (now that I've restarted):

- In the NUC BIOS, under the Devices & Peripherals > USB menu, what are the settings you have for USB Legacy and the USB ports? USB Legacy is enabled and all six USB ports are set to 'Enabled'.

I have enabled the S4\S5 Sleep option in the BIOS and will see if that makes a difference.

Many thanks

Hi ThinClient!

Thanks for post! Really seems like the same problem.

We have a working solution with BIOS 024 at the moment, but the H.264 performance is really bad with that BIOS (which is brilliant with 036).

Have you tried 024?

In our case BIOS 024 is helping, but affects other stuff (H.264 decoding).

I also openend a support ticket, but Intel only stated that Linux is not officially supported and I shall try a supported OS...

At least we are not alone, that gives some hope ;-)

At this point the xHCI is enabled by default and there is no switch on the BIOS to enable or disable this function.

Re: D54250WYKH - display (display port) shuts down unexpectedly after OS-installation

When running downgrade procedure of Bios as suggested i got an error from Bios gui: 0x80000000000000000000015, 1579.

I then followed the upgrade of bios removing jumper, following this easy step by step procedure:

Desktop Boards — Instructions for Recovery BIOS Update

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/sb/CS-023360.htm

This succesfully downgrades bios.

However it does not solve the problem of loosing monitor signal after some time after installation of windows 8 OS.

There is no warning, it suddenly looses the signal, and the monitor goes into sleep mode. It wakes up only if booting to bios.

The monitor i have is Asus MX299Q - WIndows 8 finds this monitor immediately after installation and image is displayed with correct resoloution.

I have been adviced to try two options:

- deactivate display driver and run on low res. until windows 8.1 upgrade. Answer: This is no obvious way for me to test this out as there is no dedicated driver to deactivate for the display port (?).

- try connecting with mini hdmi - hdmi cable.

Any advices of how to go about with the problem except the two options mentioned here?
