Chipset Drivers dont install NUC6i5SYH Windows 10 Pro

I have a small irritating issue where my Microsoft Wireless Mouse and Keyboard keep loosing motion even when only half a meter away from the wireless receiver connected to the Nuc.

At first we thought it was the batteries etc etc ,client eventually went and bought a new Microsoft Wireless Keyboard & mouse and still had the same problem. Keyboard and mouse works fine on a different pc and one can actually walk to the other side of the office (about 5m away) and it works perfectly. Also tried switching to different usb ports etc still had the same issue.

After doing some troubleshooting I eventually found the following:

- The Chipset drivers are not installed under programs & features

- Downloaded the latest Chipset drivers from Intel's site and manually installed, and it says it installed successfully , however after restart the Chipset drivers still not listed under programs and features.

- Also noticed in Device Manager under usb devices its using the Microsoft Generic usb drivers even after above procedure

- Downloaded the Intel update utility , it shows the chipset drivers need to be downloaded and installed but afterwards says "failed"

The Chipset drivers are mission critical I need to try get them installed somehow. Also tried using the silent and overall parameter but no luck

Model: NUC6i5SYH

Serial Number: G6SY63800180 SA H87090-505

Other Number: F44D30644D04

Operating system: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit

Hello Amy,

Okay. If we go in "private message" mode I can send you the details of exactly what I wrote, my resulting custom BIOS and the picture I used (hopefully I kept it...).

I hope you have a NUC that can be unbricked if the same happens to you.

I was wondering, do you have anything to force a BIOS to be reinitialized with defaults when this happens?  Like another special bios or parameter I can pass from a file when doing the USB stick procedure without the jumper?

Asking because I do get a response from BIOS 0033 (monitor and keyboard) so I know the unit is not entirely dead. My guess, but just a guess, is that the unit is trying to validate something (Intel or custom) and it fails and stops there. If I could get past that, gets some default values and adjust after if need be, I would be alright with that.

Thank you.

Hi

sorry for the late response.

I am not using Windows on the Nuc so i cant install the driver. With the NUC5PPYH this was working before without any problems.

Tested your recommended Settings but with the same result Set the Bios to default and tried again with the recommended settings with the same result. Still unable to power on the Nuc via remote.

The difference is :

The NUC5PPYH has an ITE8713 CIR

and

the NUC6CAYH has an ITE8708 CIR

both where recognized by linux and modules loaded

Thanks BigMot.

Sorry, I should have told you all that!

I'm looking for a .dat file, which you can attach to your comment.

It's REALLY easy!

All you have to do is open a cmd window-not sure if it has to be Admin or not-and type: dispdiag.exe  As you see below, it tells you where it puts the file.

Hi JesseD,

I understand you are trying to run two monitors using ArchLinux with the Intel® NUC7i3BNK .

I have been checking different ArchLinux forums and I see that some community members are having the same issue.  I may add that this Linux distribution has not been validated for the Intel® NUC7i3BNK as you can confirm it below:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/intel-nuc-boards/000005628.html

I was thinking that this might be a graphics drivers issue and please bear in mind that Intel does not provide direct downloads and technical support for Linux drivers. The Intel Graphics Linux driver is primarily supported by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), the Linux distribution vendor, or by the Intel Open Source Technology Center at https://01.org/linuxgraphics.

Additionally, I wanted to confirm if you tried a different Linux distribution.

AllanA, the .bio file is used to perform the update using the F7 method. Within Windows you need to use the .EXE file, since the F7 method is causing some issues please try using the executable.

One more question, were you able to set the power settings to default, and check the results?

Amy.

Hello:

Thank you very much to  for the information provided previously.

To :

As you mentioned, the SSD is listed under the tested peripherals of the NUC.

So, please try the suggestions provided by and if by any chance you have the option to test another SSD, that will a good thing to try in order to rule out a possible problem with the M.2 port.

Please let us know the results of trying the steps above.

Any further questions, please let me know.

Regards

Alberto

Hi,

I understand you have are currently experiencing random freezes with the Intel® NUC6i7KYK.
I also noticed every driver was updated. Let me try to help on this matter.
You mentioned having one external drive connected permanently.
Have you tried testing disconnecting the drive for few days?
Did you check SSD integrity? I understand you can download diagnostic tool from Samsung web site

I was concerned about the memory type, If you see memory specifications, this Intel® NUC supports DDR4 at 2133Mhz. Based on your current memory part number you have DDR4 2800 Mhz. I was wondering if you tested different memory as well.

@richpjr, Are you running the same configuration? what steps have you tried to solve this issue?

Allan.

Sure, I can send you a PM to get all the details. I would be a lot easier to follow the exact same steps you did.

That would be achieved with the BIOS recovery, removing the jumper has to happen with this method. The recovery will set all the settings to default.

Amy.

Hello RoryPohl,

Thank you for joining the Intel® NUC community.

Regarding your chipset driver inquiry, Scott provided the correct answer. The Intel Chipset Device Software installs the Windows* INF files, which inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionalities, such as USB and core PCI. This description can be found in "Detail Description" of the driver download link.

Now in regard to you the connectivity issue, I would like to know the full model of your Microsoft Wireless Mouse and Keyboard.

Regards,

Amy.

Thank you lw1948 for your collaboration.

markm1259, you can try Leon's suggestions but it is important to remember that the operating system you are trying to install is not supported by the product you have.

You can confirm the information by clicking on the following link:

Supported Operating Systems for Intel® NUC Products

Basically, this means that even if you are able to install Windows 7*, the functionality of the unit will be limited to the generic Windows drivers and the Windows compatibility tool; eventually, you will face compatibility issues as we don't have drivers for Windows 7* for the Intel® NUC Kit NUC6CAYH.

Hope this information helps.

Juan Carlos

Re: Power down USB ports in sleep mode?

Hi Kent,

I tried changing something else in the power Options, and I have some interesting results. These are my new steps;

  1. Go to Power Options.
  2. Click on change Advanced settings.
  3. Change plan settings for Balanced.
  4. Click on Change advanced power setting.
  5. Find USB settings, and click on USB selective suspend setting.
  6. Disable it.

Once I followed these steps each time I plugged a couple of USB devices to charge they did not get any power; however, this only happened with some devices. For example, I plugged an iPhone and a Sony device and these did not charge, but I tried with some Samsung phones and they were powered.

Amy.

Re: Clear PTT through BIOS?

Hello John_Ewalt,

Thank you for contacting Intel Communities.

In this case, most likely there isn't a way to clear the PTT through the BIOS in this product.

For older products such as the Intel® Desktop Board DQ67EP and the Intel® Desktop Board DQ67OW with a physical TPM module, you could clear the TPM by moving the security jumper to position 2-3 as you can see on page 10 of this document but all the encrypted data would become inaccessible with this process.

Please check below for some useful links:

Trusted Platform Module Information - Intel

View status, clear, or troubleshoot the TPM - Microsoft

Hope this information helps.

Juan Carlos

Eureka30, I am glad to hear that the clean installation worked.

Well, it is likely that once you enable the eMMC you will have a dual boot(the operating system located in the eMMC and the operating system located in the SSD), this will happen if the partition on the embedded storage was not corrupted. I do not think you should be worried, but I strongly recommend backing up your information just in case.

Let me know how it goes.

Amy.

Thank you for your response, Allan.

I'm curious where on the Arch forums you saw this same issue, as I've been unable to find anyone else with this problem there or anywhere else.

At any rate, I have now done installs of Ubuntu and then Fedora, and both were unable to detect the second monitor, same as Arch was giving me.

Third cable came in the mail today as well, and gave the same (lack of) results under both distributions, across a couple reboots apiece for good measure.

On a side note, both the Ubuntu and Fedora installs were less than smooth... various issues relating to the nvme drive being detected properly and bootloaders.

The Arch install meanwhile went off without a hitch on this system... which isn't a sentence I get to use very often.

Tomorrow I will try installing various graphics drivers explicitly under Arch again...

if anything happens to work I'll be sure to post here what it was.

Well Amy, very good news!

I unbricked my NUC using the most unorthodox method.

I don't want to share this here in the public forum but it definitely worked...  I'm a happy camper again and my NUC seems to be 100% working like before but with one weird thing.

After countless reboots and button combos, plug, unplug, try this, try that, it works.

Will PM you what I did, maybe you will be able to understand what happened, because I don't. Maybe will help you guys reduce the number of RMAs on these devices because BIOS being nuked...

Best Regards.

Hi,

Actually, there is a way to clear the PTT data by downloading a BIOS to a USB drive, plugging it in the powered off NUC and holding the power button for 3 seconds.  This will boot to a special boot menu that lets you go to BIOS recovery.  This will take a few minutes and clears all of the BIOS stored info.  Follow the instructions here: Power Button Menu BIOS Update Instructions for Intel® NUC

I tried it out today and it worked for me.  I didn't come up with this on my own, I had help from someone else at Intel.  To that person, thank you very much.
