Re: NUC5i3MYHE UEFI firmware issues

Hi DougG, I'm helping Ronny with this issue.  It sounds like the BIOS has nothing to do with your issue, is that correct?

I'm the one that asked Ronny to ask you about the 'previous version' question, and I don't quite understand your answer.

Is the firmware you're referring to on XenServer, part of iPXE, or on the NUC.  If it's the NUC what firmware are you referring to?  BootServices->QueryMode() looks like a software command to me, not firmware, please help me understand.

As XenServer isn't something that's supported, we don't know much, if anything about it, but we're willing to help if you can help walk us through this.

I can't speak for Ronny, but treat me like a 5th grader.

Well looks like I'm batting a 1000!

First point on the BIOS Recovery Update Instructions states;

  • This process is intended to be performed by a trained technician.

The second point states;

  • Downgrading the BIOS to an earlier version is not recommended and might not be supported. An earlier BIOS version might not support the latest processors, bug fixes, critical security updates, or the board revisions currently manufactured.

Did I mention this NUC was sent by Intel as a replacement to a previous one?  I don't know, but to me, you would think it would already have the latest BIOS on the computer right?  After all, the date on the Latest BIOS is 1/18/17

OK continue....

  • Do not interrupt the BIOS update process. We recommend the process be done in an environment with a steady power supply (preferably with UPS).

Check.

  • Before updating the BIOS, manually record all BIOS settings you changed (from default) so they can be restored after completing the BIOS update.

Can't get into my BIOS as I've yet to read up on how to do it.  Read about half of a 78 page TechProdSpec.pdf  Have yet to read up on how to get into the BIOS, and no that isn't in the 8 page User Guide.

  • All images in this example are for illustration purposes only. You need to select the correct BIOS files for your Intel® NUC. All BIOS update files for Intel® NUC products are available on Download Center.

Check.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet that this would be a failure for me!  Oh also looks like there's lots of power options on this thing.  At least that's what I'm reading.  Too bad it didn't do the simplest one that's been around for ages.  And yes I am able to wake my computer up with the old PC and using the same peripherals.

Thanks Alberto.  I don't know if it is a problem with TPM 2.0 or not.  Dell actually created a tool to downgrade the bios to TPM 1.2 and all mysterious behavior disappeared.  Just letting you know what fixed issues with Dell.

Hey Allan,

I have observed my NUC over the past few days and haven't had the problem after installing the latest chipset drivers with the -overall string. To test it even more thoroughly, I just shut down and booted up ten times consecutively and the blue screen did not occur. Thanks for your suggestion! It seems to be working now and hopefully this issue never happens again.

Re: NUC Drivers - How do YOU find them?

Hello all,

JamesU, Scott is right. When you find a Intel® site with drivers for an Intel® NUC all of the downloads available in that link are intended to work for that product specifically. The graphics controller included in these processors are also included in other products that are not Intel® NUC; therefore, you find a category for Intel® NUC's and category for graphics. To ensure compatibility, is recommended to use the drivers that are specify for the product, so in this case these drivers; Downloads for Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK.

Amy.

Description of functionality of LSPCon chip from MegaChips is here:

MCDP28x0 DisplayPort1.2a-to-HDMI 2.0

The chip should be part of USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter.

I have 2 USB-C to HDMI adapters and none of them is HDMI 2.0 (4K 60Hz).

Still the same problem: "Steroscopic 3D forwarding" as described in the list of features from MegaChips is not working.

The issue could be upstream.

Hello :

In regard to your inquiry, I was looking in the TPS (Technical Product Specification) of the NUCs and I was not able to find the information you requested.

Just in case here is the link for you to be able to verify it:

http://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/boardsandkits/NUC6i5SYB_NUC6i3SYB_TechProdSpec06.pdf

The TPS for the Intel® NUC7i5BNK is not available in our web site yet, so I was not able to check it.

Based on that we will review this case in order to try to provide the most accurate response in regard to the information needed.

As soon as I get any information, I will post all the details on this thread.

I also encourage all the peers viewing this thread that if by any chance they have any information about this subject, to provide comments and suggestions about this matter.

Any further questions, please let me know.

Regards

Alberto

Thanks cvare - please let me know what Ivan's thought is about the window repositioning.

SInce we are talking on this thread about sleep and audio, I would like to ask if anyone can shed light on this problem. (I am not sure it warrants its own distinct thread.)

I run Tidal's Windows application. (The company Tidal is the hifi alternative to Spotify - streaming music.) There appears to be a bug in recent versions - but USB rather than HDMI. When I select high-resolution audio (eg. 24bit/96kHz), I only get CD-quality audio (16bit, 44.1kHz) until I apply a workaround. The workaround is simply to sleep my NUC and then immediately (1 to 2 sec later) resume. The streamed music immediately resumes, playing CD quality for about 3 secs, and then it switches correctly to hi-res audio.

I have assumed this is a bug in the application. But reading here about audio and drivers and sleeping, I am wondering if anyone can think of a reason why sleeping then resuming my Skull Canyon might persuade an application to begin to operate correctly?

EDIT 9mar: It wasa bug in the application - an application update fixed this, after 6 months. I am still curious as to how switching monitor off/on could work around a USB audio bug, but suffice to say my error report here was a red herring and not relevant to the thread.

Actually the issue persists. I tried different modes of the LED and ended with disabling it completely to reduce the noise as much as possible. Right now I am awaiting rguevara feedback on another thread to determine if I need to change the unit.

Thanks to you for the explanation.

Well, from your description I do not see any steps out of the normal, it seems like it was the unit that could not take the new changes and just like you mentioned started acting up. But, let's do this let me set up my Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK, and follow the same steps you did. I will be sharing my results here.

In the meantime try checking the replacement options for your unit, here you can find the link for the chat support Contact Support, and here you can find the phone contact info for all the GEOs or locations supported over the phone:

Clear PTT through BIOS?

$

I'm attempting to use the TPM2 interface implemented in PTT on a NUC6i7KYK.  I can not find a way to clear the TPM through the BIOS.  I am unable to take ownership of the TPM as the keys have already been set.  I have seen references to other BIOS version that allow this, but the KYSKLi70.89A BIOS has not option to clear the TPM.

How is this done on other Skylake processors?

To all users, Scott and Ivan,

A good use of compressed air is to blow out the cooling fins and quiet the fan.

  I stand corrected.

My NUC looked clean (see below) but good blowing out quieted it down quite a bit. Fan quietist at rest and full tilt, slight wobble sound at 1200 RPM (ish)

Pigs do not fly, but dust bunnies do.
I have not pushed it really hard yet but its running fine (see below below)
I'm getting real good performance at room temp 70F and 60% humidity at sea level (see under below below)
Please consider this ticket closed and myself educated (again). May you, the reader, also benefit from my mistake.
Tech note: compressed air from 150 PSI tank, filtered and reduced to 100 PSI. I skip those little cans of "air". Fan cowling and RFI shielding held firm.

NUC7i3BNK DisplayPort over USB Type-C Not Working?

$
0

Hello.

  • Purchased the NUC7i3BNK  (the short, 7th gen i3 NUC), to power a pair of 2k ASUS displays.
    • Paired with 16GB stick of ram and NVME drive, running Arch Linux (on off-chance that's relevant).
    • This is for programming only, so the underpowered graphics should still be enough for this purpose.
  • Setup is as follows:
    • nuc ~> hdmi-out ~> monitor1   (works, although xrandr detects it as a displayport monitor for some reason)
    • nuc ~> displayport over usb type-c ~> monitor2   (monitor is not detected whatsoever, using dp over type-c adapter)

After purchasing the NUC and looking over the spec sheet closer I noticed that this generation has removed the mini-displayport connector in favor of DP over the USB Type-C port.

If I had known this at the time of purchase I would have opted for something else, possibly one of the prior generation, but since it was already coming I went and purchased a cable to go from that output to a full-size displayport input on the monitor.

After having it not work and thinking it was DOA (monitor was not detected whatsoever) I ended up returning it to the manufacturer, and bought two other cables from different manufacturers, doing the same thing, one in adapter form, one in cable form.

The latter has yet to arrive, but the former has and unfortunately is giving me the same result as the original cable.  For clarity's sake, here are links to the NUC, monitors, and two of the three cables I purchased (link broke for the original cable).

The NUC specs say it does DP 1.2 over USB Type-C, and the monitor specs say it takes DP 1.2 fullsize in... I don't know what else I'm expected to do to get this to work besides having bought the cable to connect the two.

I've sunk nearly $100 into cables now, trying to get this system to work with the second monitor... which is rediculous considering this was supposed to be a cheap little compact system that I could chuck an NVME drive into and drive my two monitors with, and easily take to work and back if needed.

I don't have any other devices that would let me test the adapter, but the chances of two from different brands being DOA has to be very, very low.

Have investigated BIOS updates for the device... says its running the 0036 revision, the latest one shown on the download page.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated... haven't been able to find anything online about people having similar issues... seems nobody is really trying to do dual displays with these NUC systems, despite the advertising push for that use-case.

After having sunk this much time and money into it, would much rather get the issue solved than have to get rid of it on eBay or wherever and take an even greater loss on the system.

(thank you for getting this far through my less than concise description of the issue here, by the way)
